A Record Number of Artists Make the Shortlist at the Sovereign Asian Art Prize

A total of nine Hong Kong artists made the shortlist at this year’s Sovereign Asian Art Prize, marking a record for the city. Noormah Jamal, who won the Vogue Hong Kong Women’s Art Prize, was on the list for her acrylic-on-canvas piece Did the Seed Grow? Featuring two figures sitting by a brick wall, the vacant expressions of the people on the canvas appear almost blank.

Athletes are getting more cash incentives for good results at the 2024 Paris Olympics, the Chief Secretary for Administration Eric Chan said on Tuesday. The government will boost the incentive to enable gold medalists to receive up to HK$6 million. Chan made the announcement at a ceremony to flag-present Hong Kong athletes competing in table tennis, swimming, fencing, cycling, taekwondo and rowing at the event.

The University of Hong Kong has established a scholarship to honour Professor Wang Gungwu, the founder of the Department of History and long-serving Vice-Chancellor. The HK$100,000 donation, matched under the sixth round of the Government Matching Scheme, will be used to award an annual scholarship to an undergraduate or postgraduate student studying Hong Kong history.

More than 100 local students and schoolchildren took part in the first interdisciplinary competition on robotics organized by the Hong Kong Association for Science Education, a non-profit organization. The theme of the competition was “Robots & Sustainability”. Contestants were encouraged to come up with ideas on how robots can improve our lives and the world around us.

A number of public facilities were vandalized during the anti-government protests in Hong Kong last year. The Hong Kong Police was among the targets, with some officers and civilians being injured. The riots have triggered a debate on freedom of speech in the city, with some lawmakers calling for censorship to be tightened.

Hong Kong has a rich tradition of producing outstanding scientific research. To strengthen the city’s research and innovation capability, the government will allocate a total of HK$200 million to the Research, Technology Development Fund in 2023-24.

The BOCHK Science and Technology Innovation Prize, hosted by the Hong Kong Alliance of Technology and Innovation and title sponsored by Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited, was awarded to a group of scientists and researchers on Tuesday. The prestigious award inspires scientific researchers and innovators to continue their exploration, establish themselves in Hong Kong, serve the nation and contribute to the world. The prize was handed out at a ceremony with renowned scholars and experts from home and abroad attending.
