How to Beat the House Edge in Roulette

A roullete is a casino game in which players wager on the number or type of number the ball will land on when the dealer spins the wheel. It is a fast-paced, fun casino game that offers many betting options. However, like most casino games roulette has a built-in house edge that cannot be overcome. The best way to beat the game of roulette is to play smart and limit your losses.

While roulette has a prestigious name and draws big crowds in Monte Carlo, it does not have the same popularity as other table games, such as blackjack, video poker or craps. In fact, it has one of the smallest followings of any casino game in America and is losing ground to newer games such as Caribbean Stud Poker and Let It Ride.

The roulette wheel is a solid, slightly convex wooden disk with a rim that houses metal compartments or pockets (called separators by croupiers) in which chips are placed. Thirty-six of these compartments, painted alternately red and black, are numbered nonconsecutively from 1 to 36. On European-style wheels, a green compartment at the center carries the sign “0.” There are also two red compartments on the American-style wheel that carry the signs “1” and “2.”

Each roulette round begins with players placing their bets. The croupier then throws the ball into the spinning wheel, and winners are paid according to their odds of hitting their bets. There are several types of bets, including inside bets on specific numbers or groups of numbers and outside bets on various propositions such as high-low, odd-even, first, second and third dozen, or red-black.

There are numerous systems for playing roulette, and some have been published in books or online. The simplest strategy is to place bets on the same numbers or groups of numbers that appear more frequently on the roulette wheel, or bet on the high and low numbers or the red and black. It is also wise to avoid the double zeros and other special bets, which offer much lower payouts.
