The Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize is a biennial international award which honours cities that have demonstrated foresight and good governance to achieve sustainable urban communities while providing social, economic and environmental benefits to their citizens. This is in keeping with the legacy of Singapore’s first Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew, who was instrumental in shaping Singapore into a clean and green garden city through his visionary land use, transport and environmental policies and programmes.
This year’s winners are all from Asia, highlighting the region as a hub for innovators, entrepreneurs and community leaders committed to solving global challenges while prioritising the needs of individuals. The five cities are chosen based on their demonstrated leadership and innovative solutions that address key sustainability challenges faced by their communities. The prize is supported by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and organised in partnership with URA and Centre for Liveable Cities.
Designed by H55 Studio, the prize’s identity is inspired by the ring symbol commonly used in world maps and atlases to represent cities. It is a mark of the Singapore Prize’s commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the importance of cities as a driving force for achieving these goals.
This year, the winner of the Singapore Prize will be given GBP 1 million (SGD 1.7 million) to accelerate their plans and implement them at a larger scale. They will be hosted in Singapore from 6 to 8 November, as part of a week-long event called Earthshot Week, which will see world leaders, businesses and investors travel to the city to explore new opportunities and partnerships to drive impact at scale.
In its 30th edition, the Singapore Literary Prize (abbreviated SLP) is offering 12 top prizes of up to $10,000 each across four language categories – Chinese, English, Malay and Tamil. For the first time, fiction will compete with poetry in all language categories, and readers can also vote online for their favorite shortlisted book in the Readers’ Favorite exercise. The Dr Alan HJ Chan Spirit of Singapore Book Prize, established through a $1 million donation by a Confucian scholar, is also on offer for the first time. It recognizes books that champion mindsets and values important to the shaping of Singapore, including equality, diversity, religious harmony, meritocracy, resilience and an emphasis on education, innovation and community. The Singapore Literature Prize is an initiative of the National Book Development Council of Singapore and the National Arts Council.
