Singapore Prize Winners Announced
The sgp prize is a biennial award for the best published works of fiction, non-fiction and poetry written by a Singaporean author in any of the four official languages: Chinese, English, Malay, and Tamil. It is administered by the National Book Development Council of Singapore, and supported by the National Arts Council and the National Library Board. The prize carries a top prize of $10,000. It is given out in conjunction with the Singapore International Book Fair.
The winner of the inaugural prize will be awarded a trophy and a gift code to audiobook platform Storytel. The prize will also be presented at a public ceremony in the city’s arts district, with Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Edwin Tong as the guest of honour. This year, the prize received more than 3,400 nominations from the general public, with winners voted by readers.
Prof Miksic’s book, which lays out the findings of his archaeological digs at Fort Canning and other sites around Singapore, is the result of over two decades of research. His discoveries of glass shards, bronze bowls, coins and pottery have suggested that there was an ancient community in Singapore long before Sir Stamford Raffles set foot on the island in 1819. He said the book was intended to tell some 1,000 volunteers who helped with excavations over the years that their work had made an important contribution to Singapore history.
